This is what GMO stands for, joked Vandana Shiva. To delighted applause from the audience, the environmentalist and physicist told us she has sued Monsanto five times. Way to go! Now that’s what I call a Sacred Activist!

This same sentiment is expressed by Andrew Harvey in his seminal work ‘The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism’. As Sacred Activists we need to replenish ourselves continually; we need to be fit for service. When I came across his work a few months ago, I immediately identified with the notion of marrying our spiritual journeys with our work in the world. So many of us working to bring a spiritual awareness and understanding into mainstream mental health are indeed Sacred Activists.
We are undoubtedly in a period of global spiritual emergency, a period that is calling forth a whole new generation of Sacred Activists. This is activism with a difference. Gone are the old, confrontational, antagonistic, angry assaults on what we know to be wrong. In comes a new win-win approach where we know that we are all one, all totally interconnected, all part of the same Divine whole. We understand that if I attack you, I am in fact attacking myself, so deeply are we all One. When we have felt this experientially we have no choice but to find a different, newer form of activism.
Who better illustrates this new quality of Sacred Activism than Lynne McTaggart? I’ve been very impressed with her Intention Experiment. Who could not be? She has been working with a team of researchers; leading physicists and psychologists from the University of Arizona, Princeton University, the International Institute of Biophysics, Cambridge University and the Institute of Noetic Sciences. The results are tangible and measurable, achieved through the power of collective intention, prayer and meditation.
As a result of her work and reading Harvey, I’ve resolved to bring Sacred Activism into my life more overtly. The plans I’m incubating involve addressing the issue of global spiritual emergency on my website. This feels like a natural progression from my work on spiritual emergency at the individual level. The plans include a call to Sacred Activism specifically in relation to raising awareness and understanding of transpersonal psychology among mental health professionals. The idea is to use the power of collective intention along with organizations like Avaaz (19 million members worldwide) to achieve our goals.
